Happiness Between Tails speaks to and from the heart. It connects lovers — of pets, authors, books — and of my still-unreleased novels, “Flamenco + the Sitting Cat” and “Tango + the Sitting Cat.” The stories are my love letters to all who fear they're too odd, too damaged, too old, too whatever to find happiness. I did one of those comparative writing prompts and was told i write like Wallace Stegner. I really like his books so I was pleased – but it also made me not believe in the accuracy of the prompt.
I grew up with my brothers and my father. I married a man and had two sons. I don’t know that I write like a man, but I definitely think logically and emotion gets a back seat in my thought processes. It IS a compliment!
Ha! I’ll give you one better: a friend brought in a copy of my short story, totally enthusiastic, “You must read it – look how this guy writes!” I asked, “What makes you think it’s a guy?” He said with a smirk, “A woman can never write like that.”
My book (the one I have published now) is a collection of recipes, the same as my blog. I have a short novel called “My Grandmother’s Recipes” in an anthology “The Times of Turmoil” translatedto English by my son, published in 1993 and available on Amazon.
In Communist Russia, in addition to my official job for newspaper and television, I had written politically subversive anti-communist poems and short stories that were circulated anonymously, in hand-written copies called Samizdat. That’s why my friend did not know the author of the story.
Thank you for the invitation, dear friend. I may take you up on it in a couple of weeks, when my semester ends and vacation begins. Right now I am getting my students ready for the finals, with anxiety running high.

Interesting idea, Daal.

It’s good to be compared to an actual (& fine) writer, rather than all men as if women are inferior…

Actually, I wouldn’t mind being told the opposite
