Novelist Salman Rushdie is out of the woods, though it will take a while for him to heal. Recently, he was attacked and gravely injured right before he was to give a lecture. Thank goodness the controversial writer is a tough bird. For decades, he’s evaded assassination attempts by anti-free speech people.
He’s a light in the darkness. That’s what we do, we creatives. I’ve been criticized for being oversensitive, for making too much out of too little, and for overthinking things. Artists do all that and more. We allow the timid and repressed to see possibilities they wouldn’t otherwise allow themselves to dream.

Check out this video, “We Won’t Go Back,” by singer/songwriter/activist Milck. It’s her reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. According to her YouTube channel, the song celebrates, “the power of bodily autonomy. Trusting people to make their own choices, and keeping the state out of our bodies…”

I’m glad Rushdie is going to be relatively okay. It’s a terrible thing when people are so fundamentalist that they resort to violence.

I think that if it is done in a civilized manner one should be able to express one’s thoughts and feelings without fear or censorship…. someone who uses violence and conflict is often a closed minded individual who has difficulty defending their own ideology and attacks any ideology they see as a threat… it happens often in the world of religion and faith based ideologies… “The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom”. (Isaac Asimov).. 🙂

I appreciate your pairing a paean to Salman Rushdie with a cri de coeur about abortion. The link is two-fold: artistic freedom and personal freedom, both under assault by religious extremists.
There are hopeful signs in the US that people are beginning to recognize what’s at stake and are prepared to fight back—by registering and voting in large numbers. Se can—and we must!

Actually, Satanic Verses is a mediocre work at best and poorly written, with little to interest anyone outside of radical Islam. However, anyone with a brain should support Mr. Rushdie’s freedom to express what he does in the book. When we cower in fear of ruthless people, they simply become more ruthless.
