The Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, is a great way to spend a rainy day with visiting family!

What a delight to visit MOLAA with Angela!

On display were arpilleras — textiles sewn by the women of MEMCh (Movement for the Emancipation of the Chilean Woman) to protest the 17-year-long fascist regime of Agosto Pinochet. The dictator seized control of Chile with the backing of United States President Nixon in 1973 and further support of later U.S. President Bush’s family. Women had to be creative to get word out about the killings…
“Children search trash cans for bread.” “Not everyone has running water.”
Books are burned…
All are forced to worship the dictator…

  2. There’s so much truth in these artworks, in the appeal of familiar materials like fabric and thread. We are encloaked every day with fabric and thread, but here they expose the brutality of a fascist dictatorship and the misplaced American juggernaut keeping it in charge. Art is important – it might not change the world but it does show how it really is and it can inspire to become empowered. Thanks, Daal – I’ve got to get to Long Beach – lots to see up there and only about an hour away. Thanks for sharing the city with the rest of us.

  3. Wow, what tremendous creativity here! We usually take visitors to the Art Gallery Of Ontario–they have some beautiful stuff there–and of course, the CN Tower–everyone always wants to go up that!

  5. Lovely visit… Awesome art! 🙂 One of my favorite places to take visitors and grandchildren is Colby College Museum of Art (Waterville, ME). Wonderful exhibition including outstanding traveling exhibits… Treasures abound!
