Where are you from? No, where are you really from?
Growing up moving around a lot, always with a ‘foreign’ accent wherever I resided, taught me early that identity can be a moving target.
My good friend, artist Connie Lane, often addresses identity in her sculptures and installations. Her sense of where she’s from is complex. A native of Hong Kong, she lives in Long Beach with her Angelino husband.

There’s still time to see her newest thought-provoking work at:

2018 update: Here’s her April 2018 show — the first post about Bravura — and the pre-show ‘getting ready’ post — and the performance for that show.
Also, here’s an installation she did to honor lives lost to COVID-19.

So cute. Every home makes us who we are.

It looks like an interesting installation, Daal. (I’m assuming the Hong Kong skyscrapers must be a photograph. If they’re real, the artwork is a bit bigger than I expected!) 🙂

Now that would indeed be cool!

Are you part of the exhibition? If you are not, you should be!:)) Very thought provoking post! I am a Jamaican, but I’ve lived in England almost all my life. I have Indian, European, and African ancestry. I think trying to pigeon-hole people is a lost cause. We are all so mixed up – and perhaps that is a good thing. Let him who is a thoroughbred cast the first stone! 🙂

“Identity can be a moving target.” This made me stop and think. Thanks for giving me pause today, Daal. Connie Lane seems like an artist with something important to say. I’ll see if I can get up to Long Beach to see her show, though I’m not yet driving long distances.
