This is my second of three inspirational quotes about challenges, at the behest of Harvard.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” is one of the few books I’ve read several times. Several months ago, my local public library hosted a delightful series of gatherings where attendees took turns reading from it. Shortly before author Harper Lee passed away, she published a second book, “Go Tell a Watchmen,” which I highly recommend as well.
Today I nominate Insight Your Star, a blog with a mission to help readers to be their best.
Thank you again, Harvard, for this challenge.
Find out more about Harper Lee.

Happiness Between Tails blog/podcast speaks to and from the heart. It connects lovers — of pets, authors, reading — and of my still-unreleased novels. “Flamenco + the Sitting Cat” and “Tango + the Sitting Cat,” are my love letters to all who fear they're too odd, too damaged, too old, too whatever to find love and happiness with or without a partner. I also love “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the movie version of it starring Gregory Peck, is one of the rare movies that is just as good as the book. I also read “Go Set a Watchman” and I’m glad you liked it but I was very disappointed with it. To me, it was just a very rough draft of Harper Lee’s earlier version of “Mockingbird” and I do believe that Harper Lee’s family had had it released just for profit only purposes. And I’m so very, very glad that her editor had urged her to re-write the novel but to concentrate on Scout and her family when she was much younger. I believe that “Watchman” was interesting as to how rough drafts and plots and character developments can dramatically change into a wonderfully eloquent and well-written finished novel but as a “pre-quel” it was not as well-written, or as interesting as “Mockingbird” later turned out to be.

Sissy Spacek does a supreme job on an audio book version I listened to.

even when i love something – music, a speaker, lecturer, friends or family talking with me – i’m an awful listener – don’t focus well. books on tape don’t work well for me. hopefully someone else reading your comment to me will be able to use it.

So many people I know say the same thing. I find that it depends on the reader – & of course the material too.

That’s a nice quote from the author of a great book! It’s one of my favorites too. 🙂

I understand that “Watchman” was originally a first draft of “Mockingbird.” Some readers have been shocked by the original depiction of Atticus as a racist. Did that affect your opinion of the book?

Am saddened that poor reviews have kept more people from reading it. She does an awesome job of showing people as complex, not the usual one-dimensional American heroes or villains. Atticus is not so much a racist, but a good man influenced by his times, & how we must all reach high. That’s why she didn’t publish it earlier – because people would not understand.

I only recently read “To Kill a Mockingbird” with my ears. What an amazing book. I absolutely loved it. I haven’t read “Go Tell a Watchman” yet. Must do that soon. Great quote! Thanks.
